We got up ready to ride however there were storms again. After waiting and looking at the radar, we decided not to ride. The storms were supposed to last all day. I was excited to use a full size pump to pump up all 10 of our tires. We finally got new tubes for the Burley. Leah got her third phone holder. We ate lunch at a quaint Deli. There are a couple of things I forgot to mention earlier. 10 miles after we crossed into Kansas the time zone changed. There are 12 map sections to the adventure cycling map system and we are now on map 8 of 12. During the afternoon a group of 20 cyclist stopped at the bike shop to get some repairs done. The group is called Overland and they are kids either going into their senior year of high school or their freshman year of college with two group leaders. It was fun to talk to them. We ate supper with Christian and Gary who we met a few days ago. Joe who we met tonight also joined us at the pizza place next door. It's great to share stories that only other cyclist understand. When we got up and looked at the radar, storms were coming. I originally thought we could leave and beat the storm. However that didn't happen. We decided to not cook oatmeal this morning and rode to a convenience store for breakfast. That is when the storm hit which was perfect. While we were at the convenience store, we talked to local farmers and asked them some questions we had. They told us the fields Bob and I have been "discussing" were not corn but something that looks like corn. Bob was right. The mini sunflowers that Leah is taking many pictures of, is their state flower but we never got a name for it. They said it is a weed. We waited out the storm and then left. It started out cool but then got really hot again. In Buhler, Kansas we ate lunch at a cute coffee shop call the Mustard Seed. We talked to a couple riding a tandem on the Trans Am westbound. We gave each other updates about the opposite direction. They told us in a day or two we might see wild Mustangs. In Hesston, Kansas we stop for cold drinks. How refreshing. Then we headed to Newton, Kansas to the bike hostel. It is located in the Newton Bike Shop. They call it the Oasis in the grass desert. It's run by bikers who know what bikers need and want. It's an amazing place because they understand the ups and downs of biking! We met Charlie who was an avid biker before he had a stroke. He hangs out at the bike shop. The owner of this bike shop did the movie Inspired to Ride. We went 49 miles today. |
